Spring Regeneration Project

Spring has been full of colour and energy at Banyula as Ken and Penny kicked off a new planting and regeneration project.

During Spring, Ken and Penny have been working on a planting/regeneration project which has the benefit of controlling erosion and also adding to our existing forest cover with threatened species of importance.

Using the well-established permaculture principles of swales and mounds, multiple planting areas have been built and filled.

Ken arranged for some of the trees which were felled by storms earlier in the year to be mulched, providing great coverage for new plants to get established in the warmer wetter months ahead.

Penny has sourced plants from the Community Nursery at Minnie Water with great help from Dennis and his team.

Dennis was able to advise on the most appropriate selection for the specific requirements at Banyula. Some species he recommended such as, Riberry and Midyim berry, provide a fruit and berry food source for birds and native fauna. Other plantings to date include stands of Rapanea, Blueberry Ash and Riberry.

As well as these new plantings, it was great to see the floral display from the established Melaleuca irbyana (a great legacy from Pete Turland) and the growth of the three newer ones Penny has added. With them situated alongside a Blueberry Ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatus) in full bloom, it was a great spectacle as well as a nectar source for native bees and other insects.
