We are planning to offer a community workshop about free computer and smartphone mapping tools anyone can use to better manage properties, or do useful citizen science. For example, recording species, mapping weed infestations, planning areas of work, tracking and reporting works done, mapping tracks, gates and other property assets, preparing simple maps to share with others…
We use a Google Earth Pro and Avenza Maps with great effect at Banyula. These tools can be used separately, or combined to work in the office and in the field as management tools. For more complex work, we also use QGIS, a full blown geographic information system that works with a wide range of environmental data sets available from numerous sources (such as SEED Portal) and allows for the preparation of detailed maps for a range of purposes.
If you want to learn how you can use these free tools yourself, let us know. If there is enough interest, we will set up a half day workshop in late April or early May, covering the basics and some advanced uses of Google Earth Pro and Avenza Maps.
We can also introduce QGIS and if there is enough interest, run a second workshop on that.
